Singers wanted for FW2018 Opening Ceremony!

The opening ceremony has become a vital part of kicking off Folk Weekend Saturday, and as always we are inviting singers to come and join us for a massive communal song to get the fun started. The song for this year is from our Songs of Life and Love project, which we have been working on with the Bodleian Library.

During this project Festival Director Cat Kelly, also a local choir-leader and composer, trawley the library archives for six fantastic songs, and wrote new arrangements of them for community choirs. Over the last three months, singers from Rising Voices, Chipping Norton Singers, Sounds Fun, and Towersey Village Voices, have been learning the songs, visiting the library to view the original manuscripts, and learning how to set type in the old printing presses. As part of the project Cat also worked with groups of adults with learning disabilities, and created Makaton-signed versions of the songs.

FW2018 Official Opening will be at 10am on Saturday 21st April, on the forecourt of the Ashmolean Museum

The song is called Sing On. You can download lyrics and a score below, as well as listening to recordings of each part.

There will be a warm up and short rehearsal on Saturday morning, at 9.15am in the Quaker Meeting House on St Giles (arrive from 9am).
